Consumer Energy Efficiency and Smart Grid (31 May 2012)

Event 2: Smart Grid Roadmap Discussion Series

Consumer Energy Efficiency & Smart Grid

REGISTER HERE

Please join us for a discussion with a distinguished panel exploring the intersection of Energy Efficiency and Smart Grid. Panelists will include Margie Harris from Energy Trust of Oregon, Jeff Harris from the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, Bob Jenks from the Citizens' Utility Board of Oregon, and Joe Barra from Portland General Electric. Tom Foley will moderate and a representative from the Smart Grid Consumer Collaborative may also attend to summarize results from a recent consumer survey on related issues. A more detailed description of discussion topics is listed below.

Smart Grid will ultimately have the capability of providing certain kinds of conservation measures that today rely to a great degree on consumer behavior. "Behavioral" conservation saves energy by curtailing loads when not being used to produce amenities.

In the past, these savings have relied on consumers purchasing and correctly operating programmable thermostats, energy management systems in large buildings, the bully pulpit, working with industrial customers on scheduling, and etc. Not a lot of programmatic effort has been spent on this type of conservation. Major conservation efforts have focused more on improving the efficiency in operation of lights, appliances, and other devices, in part, because the behavioral conservation has been more intangible and uncertain.

Smart Grid opens up new opportunities for acquiring conservation. How should we go about acquiring this new resource? Should we use existing infrastructure to capture it? Should we wait until the Smart Grid is in place? Discuss your thoughts moving forward.

The doors will open at 5:30 PM for heavy hors d'oeuvres and drinks. The event will conclude by 7:30 PM. Ater Wynne has been gracious enough to provide a venue for this event. There is a $20.00 charge for members of SGO to cover our costs. Non-member will be asked to pay $30.00.
